ORGANIZATION: Citizens Utility Board

CUB’s coming to your community and we need your help. We’re building a volunteer team to educate your neighbors about big issues that impact utility bills-and to help people save money.

In 2021, the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) was passed, moving Illinois to 100 percent carbon-free power by 2045. If implemented correctly, CEJA could be a national model on how states can fight the most devastating and expensive consequences of climate change while controlling costs for energy customers. We are looking for long-term volunteers who can help us continue our fight for affordable and clean energy. This can include anything from reaching out to local elected officials and community organizations to organizing phone banks and letter-writing parties in your community. We can modify our program to meet your interests and needs.

Call (312)263-4282 and ask to speak to Matt about our current volunteer opportunities. Our main office is in Chicago, but we welcome volunteers anywhere in Illinois!

About Citizens Utility Board

Location:

309 W WASHINGTON ST STE 800, CHICAGO, IL 60606, US

Mission Statement

When the Illinois General Assembly created CUB in 1983, it gave the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization a clear mission: to represent the interests of residential utility customers across the state. The statute directs CUB to carry out that mission by intervening in ratemaking proceedings before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), in the courts and before other public bodies and by providing consumers with information and assistance regarding their utility companies. Since its inception in 1984, CUB has been doing just that--working for lower rates and better service from the state's investor-owned electric, gas and telephone companies. Over the last 3131 years, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by blocking rate hikes and winning consumer refunds.

Description

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is the premier consumer group in Illinois, with over 100,000 members statewide. Since its founding in 1983, CUB has helped save consumers more than $200 billion by promoting consumer-friendly policy and providing money-saving advice. CUB is a grassroots organization with one of the strongest outreach operations in the state. In 2014 alone, CUB participated in 500 events, largely focused on energy efficiency and helping people save on their utility bills. CUB’s success in recent years prompted the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to call CUB the "gold standard" of consumer groups nationwide.
