Help the homeless by becoming a Safe Parking Program Lead

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Jewish Family Service of San Diego

Program:

Every night at two secured lots, Jewish Family Service operates a Safe Parking Program for unsheltered San Diegans living in their vehicles, many of whom are experiencing homelessness for the first time. A car is often a critical, final asset, allowing for transportation to work and school, access to services, and the ability to seek employment.

As these individuals and families work to lift themselves up out of a difficult situation, JFS provides not only a reliable place to stay, but also meaningful resources and dignified support to create a pathway to housing while meeting people where they are now.

Goal of Position:

Our Safe Parking Volunteer Leads take on a leadership role at JFS by welcoming and overseeing other groups of volunteers who provide dinners for our clients.

The goal of our Volunteer Lead position is to ensure our volunteer groups feel supported throughout the dinner service while our case management and program staff are free to meet with clients and manage all the other day-to-day logistics of Safe Parking. By coordinating these groups, our Leads help keep our clients experiencing homelessness well-fed! Our hosts also benefit from gaining experience in food handling, event coordination, public speaking, and direct work with clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Warmly welcome our volunteer groups and assist with check-in and set-up
  • Serve as an ambassador for our Safe Parking Program by educating volunteer groups
  • Ensure proper food handling and handwashing
  • Oversee dinner service and answer any questions that may come up throughout the evening
  • Provide a sense of community and support to both clients and volunteers
