  3. Assign volunteers to specific roles (greeters, repacking food, refreshments, administrative, etc.).
  4. Ensure that the greeting/unloading process is friendly and efficient.
  5. Capture total weight of the food collected.
  6. Close up drop off site.
Special Skills Got a special skill or interest you’d like to share? We can probably use it! Writing, editing, web site or data management, bookkeeping, photography...you name it. Just let us know what you can (or would like to). We’ll find a place for it.
Substitute Drivers Every once in a while a Neighborhood Coordinator gets ill, goes out of town, or just needs assistance on Pickup Day. When that happens, we have a list of people we can call on to pick up food. Put your name on the list! (You need to have a vehicle, license, and insurance for this option
Helping Sort Food On Pickup Day, dozens of volunteers pitch in at the drop-off, receiving, sorting, and stocking the food delivered by our Neighborhood Coordinators. It’s a fun, celebratory atmosphere. Volunteers generally work in 2 or 3-hour shifts. Pickup Day is the second Saturday of every even month.

Description

About us:

  • The Neighborhood Food Project started in Ashland ten years ago - expanded to the Medford area nine years ago. The Medford Food Project (MFP) includes: Medford, Central Point, and Jacksonville.
  • There are four other food projects in the Jackson County: Ashland, Medford, Phoenix, Talent, Eagle Point-plus Grant Pass in Josephine County
  • The Food Project is an all-volunteer organization. And it’s the largest grassroots volunteer organization that ever existed in this county.
  • There are more than 7000 volunteers participating in the Food Projects’ in Jackson County-including about 3000 in the MFP.
  • We have a green bag food donation pick up every even month - that’s only six times a year. The MFP volunteers collect about 32,000 pounds of food every other month.
  • To date we have collected over 2.5 million pounds of food in Jackson County-the equivalent of about 2 million meals, one green bag at a time. Neighbors sharing with neighbors. From people to give to the people who need the food. The food goes to 21 local food pantries-15 are in Medford.
  • We have proven the system works. Not only are we in the valley, but people have been hearing about what we are doing and other food projects have now sprung up in 50 communities-11 states and 3 other countries - Canada and Vietnam. There are now 16 FPs in Oregon
