Much of the produce that we rescue must be sorted through, ensuring that the end user receives produce that is attractive and of use. This helps to preserve the dignity of those in need as they receive our donations. We need volunteers to come together and sort the produce, separating the usable food from the potential compost. Stone Soup CLE is located at Cleveland Roots, where we have 25 growing beds for the community, so we have compost piles on site as well as use of a professional composting company.
When sorting is over, volunteers will clean the storeroom of boxes and make sure that our small walk-in cooler is tidy and stocked with usable, fresh produce! Compost will go in our bins, or our compost receptacle.
(We will also have ride along shifts available in January 2020.)

Mission Statement
Stone Soup CLE’s mission is to reclaim excess food and redistribute it to those in need, keeping nutritious meals on dinner tables and out of our communities’ landfills. We strive to create meaningful and sustainable solutions to hunger and food waste through education and partnerships. It is our goal to create networks of small food access organizations to increase the number of people served, enhance the client experience and lower our carbon footprint while not duplicating efforts.
Description
Stone Soup CLE began its food rescuing mission in October of 2015. By the end of 2015, an all-volunteer group of 5 food professionals reclaimed more than 7,800 lbs. of nutritious food and delivered it to those in need as a free service. Stone Soup CLE obtained 501(c)(3) status in late 2016 and moved offices to the Cleveland Roots property the following year. The organization has saved 116,000 lbs. of food in 2019, for a grand total of 258,095 lbs.,eliminating 185,828 lbs. of green house gases. SSC serves more that 25 recipient organizations and more than 30 donating organizations. We have conducted more than 100 hours of classes and seminars devoted to cooking, growing food, composting and food waste reduction.
