Volunteer Opportunity: Citizenship Tutor
Summary: Citizenship Tutors guide and support adult students who are preparing to take the U.S. Citizenship test. The ideal Citizenship Tutor has relative comfort and competence in teaching U.S. History and Government to students working towards passing their Citizenship Test. Citizenship Tutor will teach material covered in Citizenship Test utilizing flashcards and practice tests and other resources.
Estimated Time Commitment: Citizenship Tutors commit to a regularly recurring schedule of at least one 90-minute session per week. This is a long-term, ongoing volunteer commitment, as Tutors work with their regular student(s) through achievement of the student’s educational goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher is required
- Should be willing to attend orientation and training
- Must have valid email address and regular email access
- Preferred educational/experiential backgrounds include: S. History
Job Responsibilities:
- Be reliable and inform Program Staff ahead of any absences
- Motivate students with positive reinforcement, patience, and enthusiasm
- Refer to training materials to hone skills and find information
- Ask questions whenever they arise; Program Staff members are available to assist you
- Follow protocols for maintaining student records and tracking progress
- Report specific concerns or issues to the Program Staff and assist in resolving any problems
- Stay informed by reading any emails that come from the Program Director
Goals:
- Provide high-quality, consistent instruction to help students reach their educational goals
- Create and maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere for students and other volunteers
