MATH TUTORING & APPLIED STEM (middle school) - volunteers age 55+

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Lutheran Community Services

Tuesday & Thursday: Math Tutoring and Applied STEM- Middle School Students will come in to math tutoring on Tuesdays to work on math homework as well as review concepts that they may be struggling with. IF students stay focused and complete their work on Tuesdays then they will be invited to Applied STEM Thursdays where they will do different activities and experiments that focus on the application of STEM in the real world (programming robots, making ice cream, 3D printing, etc.). I know that this often seems intimidating to our volunteers, I will put it out there though, that less than 30% of our school is passing math, so we are really spending a lot of our time working on basic arithmetic skills. I do make resource sheets available for any volunteers interested as well, that way they know what the students are working on before they come in to tutoring.

TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS - HOURS: 3:00 - 4:15 PM

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE RSVP (RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM)

RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is the nation’s largest network for volunteers age 55 and over. The growing segment of our older population is vital to strengthening our communities through their interest in helping others. As an RSVP volunteer, you are strengthening the positive impact people 55 and older have in our communities. Our focus is to incorporate meaningful volunteer opportunities that provide purpose and a way to give back to the community.

RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers as it matches their personal interests with opportunities to serve in their communities. Pierce County volunteers serve thousands of each year...what a positive effect this has in the community!

Current RSVP volunteer positions include local museums, the arts, special events, food banks, congregate meal sites, non-profit thrift stores (shopping assistants, sorters, warehouse assistant, truck assistants, retail assistants, assemble furniture in a fully equipped build shop), administrative/clerical assistants, construction volunteers (no experience required), and reading buddies, math and reading tutors, Senior Friends and Social Engagement, a program of Lutheran Community Services) uses volunteers for Zoo Walk, Memory Café and Music Mends Minds) all throughout Greater Tacoma, Puyallup, Graham, Lakewood and Gig Harbor/Peninsula area.

We continually add new and unique volunteer opportunities.

We celebrate our seniors and have several recognition events throughout the year, we also have mileage reimbursement of $30.00 quarterly if you drive at least 5 miles to the volunteer site.

RSVP is sponsored by Lutheran Community Services Northwest, a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the people it serves.
