Youth Mentoring Program - 6th - 12th Grade students in West Ridge

Meet regularly and build a relationship with a youth living in the West Ridge, Chicago. West Ridge is a far northside neighborhood known for its diverse communities. You will be paired with a youth between 6th and 12th grade in a 1-1 mentorship for one year.

Mentors play the role of teacher, advocate, and friend. Assist with homework, learning English, adapting to the US, and growing up into a healthy young adult! As of right now, sessions must be held remotely until further notice. Sessions can be held on weekdays or weekends based on what you and your mentee decide. When it is safe to have in-person meetings, mentors are free to visit mentee’s houses, go on field trips and do in-person activities!

***This program is facilitated by Refugee and Immigrant Community Services, a refugee resettlement agency in Chicago working with newly arrived refugee families. To be eligible for this program, you must be a youth living in West Ridge - therefore potential mentees might be refugees, asylees, immigrants, US born, etc. and are not limited to refugee youth***

Program requirements:

  • Must commit to mentoring for at least one full year (starts when you are matched with your mentee).
  • Attend a virtual Heartland new volunteer orientation on Zoom.
  • Must meet with your mentee at least twice a month for at least two hours each (4 hours a month) and communicate mentoring activities with Heartland staff.
  • Complete fingerprinting for an Illinois State Police and FBI background checks. The cost for this is roughly $65 and must be covered by the mentor.
  • Be screened through the National Sex Offenders Public Website and the Illinois Child Abuse & Neglect Tracking System.
  • Become a mandated reporter through the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS).

Next Orientation is July 15th on Zoom! Email Alyssa at alwilson@heartlandalliance.org for more info.
