Number of opportunities available: Multiple
Opportunity tentatively slated to start: ASAP
Time commitment: Minimum 7 hours (training + a few hours of observation and/or surveying) on each survey day. Survey days may occur on weekdays or weekends. We will have multiple survey days, but you do not have to attend all of them.
Location: San Francisco Bay Area, at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Eden Landing Ecological Reserve

Survey Outreach Volunteer
Root Solutions is seeking volunteers to join a team of visionaries, creators, and disruptors who want to reshape the future of the environmental movement in North America and beyond. We are currently looking for outreach assistants to join our team.
Overall Function
In this volunteer position, you will work with Root Solutions to address the plastic marine debris problem by surveying waterfowl hunters about their hunting habits and shotgun wads.
Opportunities
· Learn about in-person observation and survey methods
· Gain hands-on experience surveying waterfowl hunters
· Gain experience working toward marine debris reduction in one of one of the world’s most progressive and environmentally conscious cities.
· Learn from and collaborate with a knowledgeable, experienced, and environmentally conscious network of professionals in the non-profit, federal and local government, and educational sectors.
Position description
· Observation and Surveying - Observe and survey waterfowl hunters about hunting habits and shotgun wads. Introduce survey and help survey respondents fill out the survey. When applicable, answer questions about the survey and purpose of the project and engage in relevant dialogue with survey respondents.
· Ongoing volunteer opportunities - In addition to this specific project need, there may also be the opportunity for those who are interested in longer-term volunteer opportunities with Root Solutions.
Qualifications
· Available to observe/survey in person in San Francisco Bay Area
· Must be able to stand to observe, and/or administer surveys for at least 2 hours at a time.
· Excellent interpersonal communication skills and comfort with face-to-face communication.
· Knowledge of environmental concepts and a passion for addressing ocean pollution issues
Organization
Root Solutions works to provide conservationists and policy makers with tools and resources informed by the proven methods of behavioral economics and behavior design, allowing them to create more effective campaigns, policies, and strategies that reflect how people are actually motivated and make decisions. By understanding human behavior and the factors which influence the choices people make, conservationists will be able to "nudge" people toward decisions and behavior that are good for them and good for the planet.

Behavioral Science and Root Solutions: A powerful approach and a new organization to help apply it
The good news is that for the past 20+ years, the disciplines which make up the field known as "behavioral science" have been researching what motivates behavior, how people make choices, and the factors which lead to less than optimal decision making. In fact, it’s been said that we are right now, in the "golden age" of decision science.
People working in a wide variety of sectors including business, public health, and politics have been putting this learning into action with impressive results. It’s time for the environmental movement to do the same. Root Solutions is dedicated to helping make that happen.
