ORGANIZATION: Friends of the San Diego Public Library

Join our team of enthusiastic book-loving volunteers and help with sorting and shelving incoming donations of books (plus media and periodicals)! We can use a couple more volunteers at this time on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings between 9 AM and 12 PM; there is some flexibility with starting and ending times--we can work with you. Location: Lower level of University Heights Branch Library, 4193 Park Blvd., San Diego 92103 (at corner of Park Blvd. and Howard Ave., across parking lot from Sprouts).

Description

The Friends of the San Diego Library is a §501(3)(c) nonprofit corporation which is comprised of Friends’ chapters at each of the 36 branch libraries in the City of San Diego-these include 33 affiliate chapters, which share our tax identification number, plus 3 associate chapters which are separately incorporated. The Friends of the San Diego Library raises funds to support our libraries and programs system-wide, holds a monthly weekend-long book sale to generate income, engages in library advocacy, provides scholarship awards to Library staff to encourage them to further their education and participate in professional development, sponsored an annual student essay contest for 20 years, recognizes volunteers from all 36 chapters at its annual meeting, and provides structure and support for the 33 affiliate chapters.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Varies--optimally we'd love to have volunteers available on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings, although just one morning would be fine. Range: from 2 hours to 8 hours per week.
  • Willingness to learn and to interact with our volunteers; dependability; knowledge of books or of any of a large range of subject matter (e.g., arts, science, literature, foreign language, children's, etc.) helpful.
