The Mission of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library is to enhance the San Diego Public Library System so that it may fulfill its literary, educational, technological, community, and cultural purposes. The Vision of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library is a thriving and sustainable library system accessible to all. The values held by the Friends of the San Diego Public Library are: • Respect for the diversity of our library communities • Empowerment of our members and library supporters • Resourcefulness and creativity for designing new approaches and solutions for issues facing our libraries • Community by building the social fabric interconnecting various groups and communities • Ethics and Integrity by adhering to the highest standards of operations and accountability
Description
The Friends of the San Diego Library is a §501(3)(c) nonprofit corporation which is comprised of Friends’ chapters at each of the 36 branch libraries in the City of San Diego-these include 33 affiliate chapters, which share our tax identification number, plus 3 associate chapters which are separately incorporated. The Friends of the San Diego Library raises funds to support our libraries and programs system-wide, holds a monthly weekend-long book sale to generate income, engages in library advocacy, provides scholarship awards to Library staff to encourage them to further their education and participate in professional development, sponsored an annual student essay contest for 20 years, recognizes volunteers from all 36 chapters at its annual meeting, and provides structure and support for the 33 affiliate chapters.
