ORGANIZATION: Atlanta Habitat for Humanity

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity transforms communities by acting as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization through education, innovative development, partnerships, and long-term relationships with families. Our General Construction Volunteers work on a construction site to help build / renovate homes in an effort to revitalize our local Atlanta community. Construction tasks vary depending on the day of the build, and further details will be sent after registration.

By helping us to build quality, affordable houses in safe, vibrant neighborhoods, we are creating opportunities for our working homebuyer families to thrive and to achieve many other dreams.

All Atlanta Habitat homebuyers purchase their houses with a no-interest loan. They will make a down payment of $750, pay a monthly mortgage, put in 250 "sweat equity" hours, and attend 12 homeowner education classes. Monthly mortgage payments will be approximately $575 - $620 and include escrow for taxes, insurance, a termite bond and a maintenance savings fund, in addition to repayment of the loan at no interest.

Time Commitment: You must commit to working for the full build day. All volunteers are needed to help clean up at the end of the workday.

Age Requirements: The minimum age for volunteers is 16. No one under age 16 will be allowed on site.

Mission Statement

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity transforms communities by acting as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization through education, innovative development, partnerships, and long term relationships with families.

Description

Since 1983, Atlanta Habitat has built more than 1,450 homes in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, housing approximately 5,000 individual family members.

Atlanta Habitat spends approximately 85 cents of every dollar on construction and homeowner programs and services.

Families must qualify to purchase an Atlanta Habitat home by being a first time homebuyer, having a household of 2-8 people, proving steady income and good credit, and having lived or worked in the City of Atlanta or surrounding counties for at least one year. Atlanta Habitat builds with families who are unable to purchase homes on the open market because their incomes- typically 30-50% of area median- do not qualify them for traditional financing.

Homebuyers lease their houses for the first year, during which they are required to contribute 250 hours of "sweat equity" on their home and others, make timely payments, care for the property, and attend 12 Homeowner Education classes through Atlanta Habitat.

After this lease period, homebuyers assume a 25-30 year no profit, no interest mortgage. Average monthly payments include property taxes, pest control, homeowner's insurance, and a maintenance savings account.

Mortgage payments from current Homeowners go directly to furthering our mission.
