Mission Statement

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity partners with working families, sponsors and communities to build affordable quality homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership.

Since 1983, Atlanta Habitat has built more than 1,050 homes in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, housing approximately 3,600 individual family members.

Atlanta Habitat's goal is to build 50 energy-efficient, EarthCraft certified homes each year, making the organization one of the largest providers of single-family, affordable homes (under $100,000) in the City of Atlanta.

Atlanta Habitat spends approximately 85 cents of every dollar on construction and homeowner programs and services.

Families must qualify to purchase an Atlanta Habitat home by being a first time homebuyer, having a household of 2-8 people, proving steady income and good credit, and having lived or worked in the City of Atlanta or surrounding counties for at least one year. Atlanta Habitat builds with families who are unable to purchase homes on the open market because their incomes- typically 30-50% of area median- do not qualify them for traditional financing.

Homebuyers lease their houses for the first year, during which they are required to contribute 250 hours of "sweat equity" on their home and others, make timely payments, care for the property, and attend 12 Homeowner Education classes through Atlanta Habitat.

After this lease period, homebuyers assume a 25-30 year no profit, with no interest mortgage. Average monthly payments are less than $600 and include property taxes, pest control, homeowner's insurance, and a maintenance savings account.

Mortgage payments from current Homeowners go directly to furthering our mission as a major funding source.

Atlanta Habitat has been responsible for allowing numerous low income families become homeowners who may otherwise not have been able to do so. The staff is always very appreciative of and respective of their volunteers and will not hesitate to let us know
