Words Alive: Words Alive is a non-profit organization that inspires a commitment to reading and develops shared reading experiences for children, youth and adults. Unlike other literacy organizations that focus on teaching individuals how to read, Words Alive seeks to imbue program participants with a lifelong love of reading and learning. We accomplish this by creating and supporting:

* Targeted programs for underserved communities;
* Community learning forums;
* Community-wide reading projects;
* Model reading programs; and
* Networks for communicating about reading.

San Diego ASYMCA Neighborhood Exchange
Every month, Words Alive partners with the Armed Services YMCA to provide books for military families in San Diego county as part of the Neighborhood Exchange. The Neighborhood Exchange is a program where military families who meet Federal Income Requirements gather to stock their cupboards with groceries. This event is fun filled thanks to support from active duty volunteers and members of the San Diego Community who come out to show their appreciation of military families. Words Alive supports the ASYMCA’s military families by hosting a booth each month to distribute new and gently used books to children attending the event! The Armed Services YMCA has recently launched this program at a second location in San Diego, and Words Alive is currently looking for two volunteers to work this monthly event at the Bayview Hills Recreation Center.

The Neighborhood Exchange at the Bayview Hills Recreation Center takes place the second Thursday of each month (unless otherwise stated) from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Words Alive is looking for two volunteers to:

  • Help families and children to select their book
  • Chat with families and children about the importance of reading
  • Pick up pre-sorted books from the Words Alive office prior to the event

The Bayview Hills Recreation Center is located at 1898 Sky Harbor Road, San Diego, 92139.
