ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Inc

About Us

At Catholic Charities, our vision is to improve the lives of those we serve, to empower the most vulnerable, and to help reduce poverty through quality, compassionate, and effective human services.

Our Refugee and Immigration Services develops programs, in partnership with refugee and immigrant communities, to promote social bridges and bonds, develop desired skills and cultural knowledge, and encourage US citizenship. Participants work to build the real-life knowledge, attitudes, and skills that they want to achieve success.

We could not do what we do without the help of our volunteers!

If you are looking for an opportunity to impact the lives of those in our community, you can become a volunteer to assist in preparing learners for their Citizenship interview.

The process of gaining Citizenship can be challenging for adults balancing work, family, and community obligations; however, with Citizenship, people receive several benefits and privileges including: the ability to vote and more actively participate in our democracy, access to better jobs and other opportunities for economic advancement (ex: home ownership, small business loans, college scholarships), and the freedom to travel more freely around the world with a US passport.

As a volunteer, you will work directly with learners to improve their English speaking, reading and writing, as well as review the 100 civics questions, and information/vocabulary on the N400 (Citizenship Application) questions. You will be given lessons plans to adapt based on your learner’s needs. Lessons take place one-on-one or in small groups once a week for 60-90 minutes at various times, days, and locations.

Although, teaching/tutoring experience is helpful, no experience or additional language skills are required. This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who want to support refugees/immigrants in a more structured setting and are willing to spend at least 30 minutes preparing for tutoring sessions. Training and materials (including lesson plans) will be provided to all volunteers.

Description

Catholic Charities mission to "provide service to those in need, to advocate for justice and to call upon others to do the same" has been the core of our work since 1920.
