South Shore Community Action Council operates a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free electronic preparation and filing of state and federal income tax returns on behalf of low-income tax payers.

The VITA program uses a hybrid model of both in-person tax appointments with the tax payer present and "virtual" tax preparation where tax payers drop off the paperwork needed to complete the return. Volunteers prepare returns onsite at our offices using TaxWise software.

We are looking for additional tax preparers to join our dedicated team of IRS-certified volunteers who have worked for the program for the past 12 years.

New volunteers are supervised by our VITA Coordinators and matched with a volunteer mentor. Volunteers complete IRS certification training prior to the start of the tax season. Certification training typically takes 20-25 hours in total. Tax preparation starts the last week of January/first week of February and runs through April 15th.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to eliminate poverty along the South Shore in partnership with individuals, organizations, and businesses that want to make a powerful impact on the lives of their less fortunate neighbors. Typically, our partners are worried about children going to bed hungry and falling behind their peers, concerned about their elderly neighbors who have to choose between heat and prescriptions, or are frustrated for working families that can't earn a living wage to afford the high cost of living on the South Shore. If you share these concerns, then we want to partner with you and help you find a way to get involved!

Description

Each year, SSCAC improves the quality of life for over 27,000 people of all ages living on the South Shore, Cape Cod, and the Islands. Founded in 1965, work together with our community partners to:

  • help to fight hunger among children and seniors,
  • keep low income elderly and families warm in winter,
  • stimulate, educate, and care for our most vulnerable infants, toddlers, and preschoolers,
  • safely and respectfully transport people who are elderly or disabled
With 7 locations, over 200 staff, and nearly 700 community partners, SSCAC is #OurCommunityInAction.
