In response to the continuing decline of the Southern Resident Orca population, Puget Sound Orca Recovery Day is happening once again on October 19th! This is an opportunity for volunteers to help at several conservation efforts around the sound and make active strides to help our neighbors in the Puget Sound.

Join Forterra and the Port of Tacoma at the Gog Le Hi Te wetlands restoration site to plant native trees and shrubs along the Puyallup River. Having a robust buffer of native plants between developed areas and wetlands filters out chemicals and sediment, cools water, and overall improves the habitat for orcas and their food: salmon.

Gloves, tools, snacks, and instruction provided. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.

About Forterra

Mission Statement

Forterra's mission is to act with immediacy to protect, enhance and steward our region's most precious resources--its communities and its landscapes. Since 1989, we have been working toward a future in which our children and grandchildren can experience nature in and around our urban environments.

Description

Forterra conserves land by working with individuals, companies and local governments. We strive to maximize the ecological value of land, while meeting the needs of landowners. We may accept land as a donation, purchase it, or transfer it to public ownership. We often serve as a broker to identify and negotiate the most effective ownership to protect important lands. We establish conservation easements to preserve special features. For each and every property, we explore available strategies or create new ones to provide permanent protection. Forterra has established a Conservation Agenda for our region, with specific priorities and methods for each type of landscape. Current initiatives include the protection of working forests on the foothills of the Cascades, and the creation of salmon sanctuaries along our region's highest quality rivers and streams.
