ORGANIZATION: One Community

One Community is an all-volunteer nonprofit sustainability think tank. We're seeking a researcher to help us determine the best medical insurance for a team of 100+ full-time construction volunteers.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be available for 10+ volunteer hours a week
  • Must have solid research experience and quality writing skills
  • Medical and/or insurance experience is a plus but not required
  • Must not be an agent or anyone seeking to profit from this research

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

One Community is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. Our construction and residency plans will include a population that will grow to more than 1000 people and we want to offer a comprehensive insurance plan for all resident volunteers. Health insurance for us has been identified as one of the largest contributors to our ongoing overhead , so we are seeking the best approach possible for the hundreds of thousands of dollars we’ll be investing.

The solution and rationale we come up with is also something we want to share as a guide for others. This guide/tutorial will be helpful for others replicating our sustainable education hubs, other medium-sized organizations seeking to provide full-coverage insurance as a benefit for their employees/members, and as a possible replicable model for collaborative health insurance implementation for uninsured groups of people and families willing to cooperatively work together and/or pool their resources/buying power to save money.

DESIGN INTENT

  1. Insurance will be 100% paid for by One Community
  2. Insurance must be easy to add and remove people
  3. Insurance plan must include covering injuries during on-site construction, work, etc.
  4. Research should include creating our own Medical Provider Network as one option
  5. Research should also include all other health insurance options including group, company, private, etc.
  6. Insurance must take into account an aging population
  7. Insurance must cover preventative checkups, dental, accidents, catastrophic health events. Would like options for prescriptions, eye glasses, etc.
  8. We want our monthly costs as low as possible, so a high deductible is probably going to be preferable and cheaper
  9. Could be combined with a separate company plan covering accidents, etc.

WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE WHEN DONE

  1. Complete research for creating our own Medical Provider Network
  2. Complete research on the individual and company insurance options available
  3. Create health plan proposal and tutorial covering rationale for best option: cost analysis, savings analysis compared to other options, coverage comparisons

SUGGESTED ACTION ITEM LIST FOR THIS TASK
  1. Research Medical Provider Network - write summary of this option
  2. Research the differences between individual, group, and company insurance options and any others we may want to choose between - summarize each one and submit for my review/feedback
  3. Create a spreadsheet to organize your research on:
    1. The major US insurance providers, contact info, reviews
    2. Primary insurance coverages offered and their associated benefits and costs
    3. Information needed by insurance companies to provide accurate quotes
  4. Create with me the profile of our organization to for 3c
  5. Contact your top insurance companies researched and begin a dialogue with them about our plan options. Add what you learn to the spreadsheet of data/information.
  6. Provide for my review your initial summary of what you’ve learned and your recommendations and rationale
  7. Research answers to any followup questions I may have and then integrate these answers and my feedback into a final report/tutorial ready for publication on the website
