One of the longest standing volunteer literacy programs in the country, the Howard Area Reading Program (HARP) provides remedial instruction for children in 2 nd and 3 rd grades who have fallen behind their peers in reading. Volunteer tutors are paired with a single child to work with weekly, after school, over the course of the school year. Program coordinators provide training for volunteers in appropriate reading instruction techniques and write individualized lesson plans for each student/volunteer pair.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attend professional development workshop on topics related to literacy, sponsored by National Louis University.
- Attend small group training on teaching the lesson plans and instructional methodology.
- Provide one to one tutoring to a student one or two days a week over the course of the school year
- Lead assigned student through a lesson plan written by a trained professional.
- Assist with snacks and student dismissal.
- Communicate any problems or concerns to HARP Coordinators.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Love of reading
- Passion for working with elementary aged-students
- Ability to commit to a student for a full school year
- Available between 3:15 and 4:30 for afternoon tutoring session on Monday and/or Wednesday ORTuesday and/or Thursday
- Dependable, prompt, and patient
- Completion of training prior to working with a student
- A background check and fingerprinting (paid for by the program) is required
