Kindergarten readiness is the #1 indicator of future academic success. Help 1 under-served child get ready for kindergarten.

What do the volunteers do? Play!

Play is how children this age learn. The child chooses what they want to play with and for how long. For an hour once a week in the child's home, you and the parent's job will be:

- engage with the child as they play
- be a cheerleader for the child as they explore through play
- talk during play to add words, have meaningful conversations
- sprinkle in observations of colors, shapes, letters, and counting
- model tenacity

So what is required?
- You need to know your letters, colors, shapes and be able to count to 20 :)
- Be 18 or over
- Enjoy working with small children

Why is this so important?

Kindergarten preparedness is the number one indicator for future academic success. Nationwide, 50% of all children from under-served populations are not entering school with the requisite skills. When they start behind, they stay behind. 73% perform below grade level through out their schooling. Help us change this by helping one child.

Give the gift of time. Take one hour out of your week and help a child an equal start at school.

Mission Statement

Learning Home Volunteers' mission is to improve educational outcomes for low-income children by transforming their home into a center of learning and their parents into agents of change for their child's educational growth.

Description

20% of the nation's children live in poverty. This effects their educational outcomes. 70% of them enter school unprepared. 50% will read at below grade level throughout their schooling. 30% will eventually drop out of high school. In our community the situation is even worse: 80% enter school unprepared and 73% are reading below grade level at 3rd grade. After 3rd grade, all learning is book based making it difficult to keep up if you can't read well.

Our program works with parents to help them prepare their child for kindergarten. Through training they learn how to support their child's learning through the use of learning materials design, built, and packaged by our experts. We are changing outcomes for under-served communities in San Mateo County. Joins us. Change the future - one child at a time!
