CORE Educational Services is soliciting applications for its first Junior Board Cohort!

Mission of CORE:

The mission of CORE Educational Services is to inspire the next generation through immersive experiences that provide youth from under-resourced communities with the opportunities, skills, and confidence to succeed in life. Founded and incorporated in 2005, CORE Educational Services, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides exciting and intriguing after school activities to high school students throughout Southern California that build their self-esteem and leadership skills, and prepare them to graduate, pursue a college degree, and start a career.

Mission of Junior Board:

The Junior Board engages young professionals in supporting and advancing the mission of CORE. Junior Board Members will have the opportunity to contribute their skills and talents to grant writing, fundraising, relationship building, and program development to foster organizational sustainability and growth. CORE is currently soliciting applications for its first cohort of five Junior Board Members. The cohort will learn about board leadership and nonprofit management, network with other professionals from the fields of education, finance, real estate, and more, and build their skills and resume. The Junior Board is designed to serve as a training ground for board membership on the CORE board and/or other nonprofits. The Junior Board requires a commitment of one year, but with long-term opportunities: As the first cohort, this group will have the opportunity to recruit for, plan, and mentor the following year’s cohort, and to potentially apply for a full position on the board (depending on board size and needs at the time).

Junior Board Commitments:

  • Every Junior Board member will attend an orientation meeting and at least two other in-person meetings throughout the year.
  • Every Junior Board Member will serve on at least one committee (Fundraising & Grants; Marketing & Communications; Programming) where they can apply their special skills, perspective and experience (minimum of four calls per year), and will contribute to committee projects between meetings. The Junior Board Member will report back to the Board Chair and committee on progress on a monthly basis via email or phone.
  • Every Junior Board Member will participate in at least two all board calls per year.
  • Every Junior Board Member will make their best effort to participate in the group’s major volunteer events and fundraisers and will actively encourage the support of their friends and colleagues (goal is for each member to "bring" at least three (3) prospects to each major event).
  • Every Junior Board Member has a give/get goal of $300/year.
  • Every Junior Board member will commit to a one-year term with the option to continue involvement after the first term, particularly through recruiting, coordinating, and mentoring the incoming cohort. Depending on board size and need at the time, there may also be an opportunity to apply for a full position on the board.

Benefits of Junior Board Membership:

  • Opportunity to support an important cause that is impacting youth in unparalleled ways.
  • Opportunity to build your network of like-minded, well-established, reputable professionals from a variety of fields.
  • Opportunity to strengthen your understanding of non-profit governance and operations, particularly budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, relationship-building, etc.
  • Opportunity to prepare for board leadership.
  • Opportunity to add additional experience and skills to your resume.

Membership Process:

Interested candidates should complete the following form: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=Uwv0W4MB_EizCr3TEk7KHbZdqM_CRNJFjTTih4dKke9UOTFQVDgySVcwSURBR1cwS1JHMlpWNDFGNS4u by July 30, 2019. The Board Chair will then schedule a call with you to learn more about your interest in joining. After the call, the Board will review the applicants and select those who will be invited to join the Junior Board. Description

CORE's Background
CORE Educational Services was incorporated and founded in the fall of 2004 by two dedicated youth workers. Brad Lupien and Gary Lipsky shared a vision of increasing and broadening educational opportunities for older youth in out-of-school time. Brad and Gary, Partners of the for-profit business arc, have served thousands of youth in Southern California since 2002. Both desired to bring their programs into communities whose youth had not benefited from these exciting and educational after school experiences. Their vision was to cultivate leadership and life skills such as confidence, self-reliance, resourcefulness, creativity, and community and to increase learning opportunities at schools to help students gain the competitive edge to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Through CORE Educational Services, Brad and Gary are able to offer these meaningful educational opportunities to underserved communities.
