Do you know Cantonese or Mandarin? Translator needed for adult class
ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army Alameda County
Please visit the new page to apply.
Join The Salvation Army in bridging the Chinese/English language barrier for students in a classroom setting.
As a volunteer Translator, you will help adults understand the instruction in the construction training program they are attending. Translator volunteers are the kind face and helping hand that support young men and women who are working toward a viable trade in the construction field. Per the instructor's direction, you will guide the student through the study guide, translate the teacher's instructions, and help the student engage in the classroom discussions. In turn, by helping the student, you are also assisting their families because when they graduate they will be employable and better equipped to help their families escape from the depressed economical state they were in. Your efforts will open doors to future opportunities for them. In addition to translating, you may be performing other in-class duties to assist the students in overcoming the language barrier.
Must be 18 years or older and able to speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or both.
Information about the construction training program:
This is a free hands-on training program that provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the construction trades as a career path. Upon completion, students receive both OSHA 10 certification and Construction Training Card (such as Electrician in Training) and are ready to work. Our goal is to teach 10 students per quarter with electrical work, carpentry, painting and plumbing, plus the job readiness skills needed to start a new career path. Upon graduation, the students receive free boots, tools and a tool belt.
