The Historic Sites Volunteer Corps is looking for volunteers to help with a small demolition and landscape clean up on Saturday, 13 March from 08:30am - 1:30 pm at Clemyjontri Park. In order to participate in the demolition and clean up volunteers must wear long sleeves, long pants, closed toed shoes, and work gloves. Volunteers must also adhere to CDC guidelines and wear a face mask or covering while participating. Please sign up using the link: https://volunteer.fairfaxcounty.gov/custom/1380/opp_details/182685

Age Requirements: Ages 12 - 15 are welcome with adult supervision. 16 and up are allowed to work without adult supervision, but we require a driver's license for confirmation.

This volunteer opportunity would be great for anyone interested in history, architecture, carpentry, landscaping, and community outreach.

Description

Fairfax County Park Authority is fortunate to own and care for several historic houses, outbuildings, and surrounding landscape, but the needs are greater than the paid labor force can provide. The HSVC is designed to provide supervised and planned attention to the minor but crucial maintenance and repairs of those facilities and grounds by a group of concerned and knowledgeable volunteers. This group also serves as a presence for these unstaffed facilities to deter vandalism and unwanted activity.

  • Replacing door and window trims, stair railings, siding, and other basic carpentry work.
  • Painting of interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Removing invasive and problem causing plants.
  • Improving the landscape of the grounds.
  • Building and replacing fences.
  • Cleaning facilities in area of deterioration.
  • Caulking and sealing areas for water protection.
  • Documenting and reporting failing conditions.
  • Checking on facilities and grounds periodically.
  • Outreach at public events.
