Mission Statement

Fairfax County Park Authority Resource Management Division Mission Statement We interpret and preserve Fairfax County's natural and cultural resources for the enjoyment, health and inspiration of current and future generations.

Description

Fairfax County Park Authority is fortunate to own and care for several historic houses, outbuildings, and surrounding landscape, but the needs are greater than the paid labor force can provide. The HSVC is designed to provide supervised and planned attention to the minor but crucial maintenance and repairs of those facilities and grounds by a group of concerned and knowledgeable volunteers. This group also serves as a presence for these unstaffed facilities to deter vandalism and unwanted activity.

  • Replacing door and window trims, stair railings, siding, and other basic carpentry work.
  • Painting of interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Removing invasive and problem causing plants.
  • Improving the landscape of the grounds.
  • Building and replacing fences.
  • Cleaning facilities in area of deterioration.
  • Caulking and sealing areas for water protection.
  • Documenting and reporting failing conditions.
  • Checking on facilities and grounds periodically.
  • Outreach at public events.

I have attended a number of events. They have all been interesting and well-worth my time. You get an opportunity to learn about the history of our area and maybe learn some new skills. Will be doing many more in the future.

It was an unique experience to be able to examine and explore a historic property that is in our area.
