ORGANIZATION: VERNER

Purpose: This position will support Verner’s mission of delivering high-quality early childhood education by enhancing outdoor learning experiences in Verner’s Experiential Gardens and North Carolina Outward Bound (VEG!). By developing a seasonal garden plan, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, and maintaining garden beds the VEG! Coordinator volunteer will improve the vitality and accessibility of the garden, ensuring it’s a lasting feature in the Verner experience.

Results: This position, under the guidance of Verner’s Volunteer Coordinator, will maintain the garden’s vitality through the seasons, and lead community and parent volunteer involvement in the garden.

Suggested Activities:

  • Develop and oversee the seasonal planting plan,
  • Manage ongoing garden task list for classes and volunteers
  • Recruit and organize VEG! volunteers,
  • Lead monthly garden nights,
  • Assist in the design and construction of garden projects,
  • Water, cultivate, transplant, weed, and harvest garden beds while prioritizing the space as a learning environment for children under the age of 4.
  • Maintain garden paths.
  • Spread mulch.
  • Organize, clean, and maintain Garden Shed and the garden tools.

Qualifications:

    • Gardening experience (seeding, weeding, harvesting, identifying weeds and stages in plant development),
    • Physical ability to spend 2-6 hours a week on your feet on uneven terrain and move frequently from standing to kneeling,
    • Able to prioritize among several tasks,
    • Comfortable developing a seasonal planting plan and identifying garden tasks,
    • Small-group/volunteer management
    • Knowledge of safe tool use
  • Landscape and/or construction experience favorable

Description

Verner is a nonprofit providing high quality, affordable early care and education to children six weeks to five years old in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The organization provides 5-star comprehensive care and education to almost 200 children and their families at two centers in Asheville and Candler, NC and through a home-based Early Head Start program. We also provide families supportive services and programs such as Mothers on the Move, Rainbow In My Tummy(r) and trained staff provide individualized case management to families in crisis. We were founded to ensure that all children have access to high quality affordable care. Our blended program accepts vouchers, as well as private pay families. Verner is also an Early Head Start provider and North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten provider.

  • We are seeking individuals able to commit at least 4 hours a week beginning May 2019 through late fall. Times and days of the week are flexible. Must be available from 4 pm to 6 pm on the third Thursday of the month during our monthly work party.
