Early Childhood Education Classroom Support - East Asheville

This position will support Verner’s mission of delivering high-quality early childhood education by supporting classroom teachers for children ages Birth to 5. This position supports teachers with various tasks including but not limited to reading to children, cleaning and decorating the classroom, joining meal times, and playing games. This position, under the guidance of Verner’s Volunteer Coordinator, will optimize the abilities of classroom teachers teach and manage the classroom while also providing opportunities for children to engage with members of our community. Classroom volunteers provide the following activities: Storytelling Playing games Meal-time support Cleaning and decorating the classroom Singing songs We are seeking individuals able to commit at least 1+hours/week. Times and days of the week are flexible. Preference given to individuals who envision themselves as long-term volunteers. Qualifications: Individuals volunteering more than twice a week are required to complete a TB screening test. All volunteers will be required to submit a physical assessment of health. Positive and friendly individuals who take direction well. Physical ability to spend 2-4 hours a week on your feet and move frequently from standing to kneeling. Experience with young children or an interest in early education preferred. Able to commit to a regular schedule for at least three months. Routine and reliability is important for our children.

Garden Volunteer Opportunities in VEG

Verner Center for Early Learning is looking for volunteers to work in our Experiential Garden at North Carolina Outward Bound (VEG!) The garden is conveniently located at our center on Riceville Road. At the beginning of the pandemic, we developed an even more pressing need for an outdoor classroom. Thanks to amazing volunteers, this space has transformed into a magical area for outdoor play, loose parts, and sensory experiences. A garden requires a lot of upkeep, even over winter! We are looking for people who are interested in landscaping, gardening, carpentry, and art! We currently have two volunteer shifts during the week--Tuesdays from 11:00-1:00 and Fridays from 1:00-3:00. Verner is a nonprofit providing high quality, affordable early care and education to children six weeks to five years old in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The organization provides 5-star comprehensive care and education to almost 200 children and their families at two centers in Asheville and Candler, NC and through a home-based Early Head Start program. We also provide families supportive services and programs such as Mothers on the Move, Rainbow In My Tummy(r) and trained staff provide individualized case management to families in crisis. We were founded to ensure that all children have access to high quality affordable care. Our blended program accepts vouchers, as well as private pay families. Verner is also an Early Head Start provider and North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten provider.

Wonderful work done for these children and the community but the lack of coordination amongst management, staff and would be/current volunteers dampens the effect. Not enough funding to keep them adequately staffed causes everyone to be spread thin. Maybe this is why there's weeks before a response to volunteer requests and only following up when they're in need. Great people but a horrible volunteer program. The position to rock babies was never honored... Instead various gofer tasks.
