AKA Science

BECOME AN AKA SCIENCE CLASS LEADER... BECAUSE ALL KIDS ARE SCIENTISTS!

AKA Science is an after-school youth program that engages historically underserved children in grades K-6 with fun, hands-on science programming at SUN Community Schools across Portland. Classes are one day per week for 8 weeks and are approximately 60 mins long. The Summer 2019 topics are Fun Physics: Forces & Motion! and Fun Physics: Color & Light!. Classes begin approximately the first week of July (depending on the school site), with mandatory Class Leader training dates TBD in late June.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

A program of Impact NW, AKA Science is an inquiry-based, NGSS-aligned science program that uses structured yet playful scientific activities to encourage students to actively participate in the world through scientific exploration. AKA Science provides Class Leaders with all of the curriculum, materials & supplies, and training they need to be successful. Training includes inquiry-based learning techniques, classroom management, and hands-on practice with activities in the curriculum. This is a temporary, very part-time volunteer position (1-hr per week for 8 weeks) and exact SUN location will be based on site need.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We seek volunteers who are passionate about education and have a positive attitude. Previous experience with school-aged children is preferred. Background in science is helpful, but not necessary-we train you! Applicants must be over 18 and able to pass a background check.
