Paddlers Invade Downtown Tampa in the fifth annual Gasparilla Stand Up Paddleboard Invasion

Featuring 5k and 10-mile paddle races, Tampa’s grass roots event has grown into a premier destination SUP event that attracts participants throughout Florida and from all over the US & Canada, including TX, CA, NY, PA, MD, SC, GA, Washington D.C. and Toronto. Stand Up Paddleboard, Kayak, Outrigger Canoe and Surfski paddle races launch from Water Works Park, 1710 N. Highland Ave, Tampa, FL, 33602 on Saturday, May 4th, 2019.

New: This year’s race event features an education campaign shedding light on one of the leading causes of death amongst young women in the US: lupus.

We need help is various areas of the event, starting at 5:30am until 3:30pm- shifts available. Please register for a shift, below online at https://gasparillasupinvasion.enmotive.com/events/volunteer/2019-gasparilla-sup-invasion_1

SET-UP 5:30am - 7:30am - Help install tents, flags, tables CONCIERGE 6:45am - 9:00am -Be a friendly host, guide participants, answer questions, step in where needed. REGISTRATION 6:45am - 8:45am Body marking, and swag bag distribution RAFFLE 7:00am - 9:30am - Raffle ticket tent attendees sell raffle tickets, secure items, or Raffle ticket sales on field, interacting with public, driving raffle participation and ticket purchase DOCK SUPPORT 8:30am-11:30am - 8:30am check-in with race organizers / lead volunteer 9:00am stationed on the dock 9:15am help paddlers and crafts load-in and load-out of water Prefer volunteers with paddling experience. Must be a proficient swimmer. SAFETY PADDLERS 8:30am - 1:00pm - Safety Paddlers with their own paddle craft (SUP or Kayak). Must be a proficient paddler and swimmer who can communicate and assist race participants if they need support on the water. DRIVER / LUNCH PICK-UP & DELIVERY 9:00AM - 10:30am - Pick up racers' food (Moe's in Brandon) and deliver to Water Works park. CONCIERGE 9:00am - 11:00am - 9:00am - 11:00am - CONCIERGE - Be a friendly host, guide participants, answer questions, step in where needed. BOUNCE HOUSE ATTENDEES 9:00am-11:00am - Bounce House Attendees supervise children's safe use of the bounce house. RACERS' LUNCH SUPERVISORS 10:30AM - 1:00PM - Receive food delivery, set up food and tent, supervise food line, collect food ticket from racers and ensure that only racers with tickets are given free lunch. BOUNCE HOUSE ATTENDEES 11:00am -1:30pm - Bounce House Attendees supervise children's safe use of the bounce house. DOCK SUPPORT 11:30am - 1:30pm - Helping paddlers and craft load-in and load-out of water. Prefer volunteers with paddling experience. Must be a proficient swimmer. LAND-SIDE SUPPORT 11:30am -1:30pm - Help distribute racer water, provide general support to race organizers, be a conduit of communication, proactive and positive communication with participants and spectators. CONCIERGE 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Be a friendly host, guide participants, answer questions, step in where needed. AWARD SUPPORT & EVENT CLOSE 1:30pm-3:30pm - Support awards ceremony, help vendors load-out, help clean up / pick up the park

The LFA energetically pursues its mission through five program objectives:

  • Provides direct financial support to researchers through LFA's own national research program, Bringing Down the Barriers
  • Advocates for increased public and private sector support for research on lupus
  • Translates research findings into medically sound information and programs for people with lupus, their families, physicians, and other health professionals
  • Heightens public awareness of the impact of lupus
  • Supports individuals with lupus, their families and caregivers
