Pacific Pocket Mouse

The Institute for Conservation Research (ICR) part of San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) is involved in Pacific Pocket Mouse (PPM) conservation. We have a research & breeding facility in Escondido and a release site in Laguna Beach at the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.

We are doing a field work on Monday April 22nd & Tuesday April 23rd. Volunteers are welcome to join for 1 day or both. On each day we will start working at the site at 9am and will end at 1:30pm.

Volunteers & staff will be carrying supplies (cages, burrows, nest chambers, shovels) to the site from the vehicle. They will be digging holes, placing the underground portion of the cages, covering the nest chamber and burrows with dirt, and setting the above ground portion. There are 30 cages to install. It is labor intensive, and in the sun; however, there will be air conditioned vehicles, and plenty of water. The field site is an open area so no tree coverage but breaks are welcome and volunteers can use the vehicles for shade and AC. More details and safety training will be provided to all those joining this field project.
