ORGANIZATION: Utah's Hogle Zoo

POSITION DESCRIPTION

As a Bird Show Volunteer handling and learning how our birds are trained using positive reinforcement gives an individual the opportunity to learn the techniques to become a skilled trainer. Under the guidance of our staff, you will be taught the proper way to handle and train birds. You will learn ecology and conservation, make new friends, develop new skills and contribute to the quality of life in our community. Our Bird Handling program offers a hands-on opportunity to work with birds from our collection in a zoological setting.

Bird handlers are taught to handle and interpret a variety of birds, including hawks, owls, eagles, ravens, macaws and many more! This position is a significant time commitment. While presenting the bird show to the public you will learn and develop presentation skills and develop self confidence. The goal of our show is to develop a love and appreciation of our natural world to our visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Bird Show Volunteer activities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Helping to present a free flying bird show to visitors.
  • Cleaning and husbandry of bird collection.
  • Learn basic veterinary skills coping beaks clipping toenails and preventive medication for the collection.
  • Assisting with special after hours shows
  • Working with bird behavior and enrichment.

  • To empower our visitors to make a difference in caring for our natural world.

QUALIFICATIONS

Under the close guidance of our staff you will learn to handle and work with the birds in our program. Volunteers must be genuinely interested in becoming a team player. They must care about people, animals, nature, and conservation. They must be friendly, enthusiastic and outgoing. Volunteers must be committed to providing our guests the highest standards of customer service and be dependable and able to make the minimum commitment of hours. Because of the nature of working close to a variety of birds in free flight demonstrations volunteers need to demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and an ability to follow direction.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must look professional and presentable for a family oriented program.
  • Include any safety training they will need to complete: ladder safety, power tools, etc

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of one day each week. Shifts run from 8am-2:30pm on weekdays and 8am-4:30pm on weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMAND AND SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires long periods of standing and walking. This position requires exposure to the elements such as heat, cold, rain, and snow. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.

Description

Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s 42-acres are located in Salt Lake City, Utah at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. It houses a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, birds and other animals from diverse ecosystems around the world. Our goal is to increase understanding of, and responsibility for, local and global animal species and ecosystems

There are more than 2,000 USDA licensed wildlife exhibitors in the US but less than 10% of them have been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( AZA). Hogle Zoo is one of that 10%, which means that it is recognized as being one of the best zoos in the world. Hogle Zoo is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( WAZA)
