ORGANIZATION: Cambridge School Volunteers, Inc. (CSV)

As a volunteer mentor in Cambridge School Volunteers' Art & Science in One Program, you'll receive orientation and four hours of training in nature journaling and observational drawing from an experienced instructor before being matched with a fourth- or fifth-grade student to mentor. The entire class in one Cambridge Public School is matched with individual mentors; the student-volunteer pairs work together on structured, supervised nature journaling activities for a series of Fridays from 11:30 to 1:30 during the school day. This program is designed to boost children's engagement with science, develop the practice of close observation so integral to middle and high school science learning, and seed environmental stewardship. The outdoor sessions of the program occur at Fresh Pond Reservation, a biodiverse, city-owned open space and habitat.
