Ambassadors are individuals who represent the Norfolk Public Library in events such as festivals, fair, and community venues. They will function as "Library Docents" and will engage the public and talks up our services and award-winning programs as well distribute library information and resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Man a Table at Community Events
  • Promote the NPL volunteer and Friends programs
  • Talk up Library resources and programming
  • Pass out Library Information
  • Direct Participants to Library’s Webpage

Our expectation is to secure friendly, engaging volunteers, who enjoy working with the public and who will actively promote the Norfolk Public Library at outreach events. We are also seeking reliable individuals would are able to cover events scheduled at nights & weekends.

Training

The ambassadors will:

  • Become familiar with our programs & targets age groups
  • Location of library branches
  • How to engage the public
  • How to promote upcoming events with handouts
  • Assist attendees with simple art activities or mementos

Types of Events

Festivals/Fairs - Large events that attract families

  • Children’s Festival
  • Navy STEM Fest
  • Stockley Gardens Art Festival

City of Norfolk Events

  • Play Day at Tarralllton Park
  • Dogs Gone Swimming
  • Fountain Days at Towne Point Park

Community Events - events that are sponsored by community agencies

  • Parent University
  • Chrysler Museum Family Day
  • Community Impact Health Fair
  • School Fairs

As Library Ambassadors, participants will attend training to be indoctrinated in all the libraries programs & services. The library offers a comprehensive lineup of programming that services all ages. Programs will include: Early Literacy, School Age, Teens, Adults, Summer Reading Program and System-wide Celebrations & Cultural Events.

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Training and orientation will take up to 4 hours. Ambassadors will volunteer at community events for periods between 2-8 hours per event.
  • Ambassadors must be able to provide their own transportation to community outreach events.
