  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Are you an undergraduate/postgraduate university student looking to carry out your dissertation or thesis research abroad? Come to northern Peru and conduct your socioeconomic or scientific research with EcoSwell!

Interns are welcomed to develop their own research project as part of their application, if it aligns with EcoSwell’s work, it will be accepted. Alternatively, the following are projects/research topics currently available:

  1. Quantifying the impact of EcoSwell’s projects in helping meet the UN SDGs.
  2. Cultural change in the artisanal fishing community: what happens when the fish run out (overfishing) and in a 2° C warmer world? What is the role of the local government in this scenario?
  3. The impact of population growth on the illegal deforestation of the equatorial dry forest.
  4. Ecotourism and its economical and cultural impact on illegal loggers of Piedritas.
  5. The impact of surf tourism on the artisanal fishing community of Lobitos.
  6. Design proposals aimed at influencing public policy based on the economic results obtained from EcoSwell’s surfonomics study on the locality.
  7. Green Lobitos: Awakening an environmental community - how has this community greening project influenced local housewives (project leaders) view on environmental care - qualitative study.
  8. Effects of oil pollution and climate change on marine biodiversity, fishing productivity and societal change in the northern Peruvian coast.
  9. Determine the impacts of the deforestation of the equatorial dry forest on biodiversity, and the impact it may have on the north Peruvian desert population, considering the rise of climate change.
  10. Adaptation of the Peruvian Plantcutter to climate change and deforestation of its habitat (the Peruvian Dry forest). Potential characteristics to research, include changes in diet and nesting.
  11. Determine and quantify climate change's impact on arid communities heavily affected by El Niño in northern Peru, identifying and implementing mitigation measures.
  12. Adaptation and mitigation measures to dengue fever due to water scarcity. Dengue is the main health hazards of the El Niño phenomenon on the north Peruvian desert. Research could focus on identification of how this health hazard spreads, and how it could be mitigated.
  13. Implementation of decentralized sanitation alternatives as a response to health hazards and political inactivity - biodigesters, dry toilets and water filters in Lobitos and other northern communities. The focus could be on determining people’s interest and education level in regards to these sanitation options, with the objective of implementing them in order to avoid sanitation health related issues.
  14. There is a growing uncontrolled tourism sector in the region, which is unregulated. How can this sector be harnessed to ensure growth happens in a sustainable manner.
The research may be quantitative or qualitative and you will be supported by our multidisciplinary team who have vast past experience in socioeconomic research before, during and after your time with us in Lobitos.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to design and develop socio-environmental, educational and infrastructure projects with the purpose of guiding the development of semi-rural localities in the north of Peru through the path of a sustainable development, increasing the quality of life of their inhabitants.

Description

We are a surfing-inspired NGO operating in Lobitos, a small town on the northern coast of Peru. EcoSwell was established in 2013 by a multidisciplinary team of young professionals who have a passion for the development and well-being of Peru's vulnerable population and ecosystems. Since then, EcoSwell has positively impacted entire communities through immersive, bottom-up projects with the valued help of international volunteers, sponsors and the local people. Not only have we designed and built sustainable engineering solutions such as dry toilets, a solar distiller and irrigation systems, but we have also contributed to the empowerment of women and their families through educational programmes and workshops. We aspire to continue working closely with local communities to keep growing and expanding our impact across poorer parts of the region.

We are currently working on a diverse range of projects which we consistently need volunteer help with. The internships that we offer include:

  • Reforestation
  • Eco Tourism
  • Sanitation Initiatives and Waste Management
  • Renewable Energy
  • Surfonomics/World Surfer Reserve Research
  • Medical Electives
