Do you have a passion for conservation and sustainable development? Come to Lobitos in northern Peru and work towards conserving endemic flora and fauna with an international NGO! The people of Lobitos remember that decades ago, their desertic landscape was once green. Without trees, and the shade they provide, the intense heat of Peru's northern sun makes it difficult to enjoy public space. Our qualitative research, and the direct demands of the women and the elderly, has led us to acknowledge the importance of green, shady neighborhoods for community development and community building. Greening is not easy in an arid land where lack of water is a main issue, and many public efforts to do so in the past have not been successful. This is why the "Green Lobitos" project directly involves fishermen families, as well as public entities and private companies in a community initiative aiming to recover the Peruvian dry forest (the natural habitat of the endangered Peruvian Plantcutter species) sustainably through the application of permaculture principles. By slowly building trust through sensitization at a household level, EcoSwell has achieved the commitment of over 50 leaders, mainly women, which have been empowered to raise environmental awareness in their neighborhoods by reforesting public space, utilizing in-house waste and water reuse methods. Together, they have planted and are consistently taking care of more than 400 seedlings, some of which have already grown into full-sized trees. The project currently impacts the members of more than 50 fishermen families, raising their awareness on environmental issues and preparing them for climate change impact mitigation. It specially empowers women and children, as they are the ones who lead the greening efforts. The activities resulting from the project have reported as helpful for family self-esteem and in improving relationships between neighbours. A typical day on this project may include: Design, plan and execution of a local communications and educational campaign to increase awareness about the dangers to the Peruvian Plantcutter. Taking part in house to house visits within the community delivering fertiliser, seedlings and helping participants of the project with maintaining their plants. Liaise and get involvement from all local stakeholders in conservation efforts (local government, local military, local big oil industry, local people, schools, fishermen, other organizations) Manage land surrounding Lobitos under conservation strategies and community vigilance. General monitoring of the plants and seedlings. The work day will typically range from 9am to 5pm (with a lunch break) five days a week with plenty of free time opportunities to go surfing, fishing, swimming with turtles or simply watching the sunset on the beach. All accommodation and fresh, healthy food is included in the financial contribution. Requirements: Genuine interest in sustainable development. A positive attitude and willingness to learn. Experience working away from home. Ability to be flexible. Good team working skills.

Are you a 4th/5th year medical student who speaks a high proficiency of Spanish? We need doctors and medical students to come help us in Lobitos to provide healthcare to the local community in northern Peru. The precarious socioeconomic and environmental conditions in Lobitos and Talara (the closest city to Lobitos) mean that the local population is exposed to a range of health problems. These include respiratory problems, infections, viruses such as zika, dengue, flu and chikungunya along with birth control and sanitation issues. Despite this, the medical post in Lobitos is not functioning to capacity and the hospital in Talara is greatly understaffed, which leads to demands for medical help and attention not being met. Additionally, there is a severe lack of public health awareness, therefore perpetuating health issues within families. As a result, we have established a cooperative Medical Elective programme alongside the Lobitos medical post and the hospital in Talara in order to combat these issues. As part of this, medical students and/or professionals volunteer for EcoSwell supporting the understaffed hospital in Talara in the following specialities: Respiratory, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Dermatology. As part of this placement volunteers also design and implement public health educational initiatives in Lobitos for the local population in relation to the identified challenges. Additionally, there is a bursary available to contribute towards the financial contribution required by the applicant and to cover medical equipment which will be bought for the community. For this position we require applicants to have at least an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish, and to be either in their last year of their medical degree or to be qualified doctors. Good team working skills, an open mind, positiveness and adaptability will be essential traits that the candidate will need to have. A typical work day will usually be 9am-6pm (with a lunch break) five days a week and plenty of free time at weekends and in the evenings to go surfing, fishing, swimming with turtles or simply watching the sunset on the beach. Medical Elective interns will be supported by the EcoSwell staff, members of the Lobitos health post and doctors from Talara’s hospital during these activities. Volunteers will need to spend at least one month with us, time in which they will spend half of their placement in Talara helping at the hospital under the supervision of a local doctor and the second half, carrying out the public health educational initiatives in Lobitos. Regular updates on progress via Skype with EcoSwell’s UK based doctor will also take place. All accommodation and fresh, healthy food is included in the financial contribution.
