What is Hospice of Alexander County?
Neighbors serving neighbors in Alexander County since 1985, Hospice & Home Care of Alexander County, Inc. specializes in easing the physical, emotional and spiritual discomforts that each patient and their family face as the end of life nears. Hospice & Home Care of Alexander County, Inc. is committed to helping both patients and their families live life to the fullest with optimal comfort and support. Hospice care is offered when a patient is no longer receiving curative treatment and has a life expectancy of six months or less. It includes palliative (comfort) care in addition to a wide range of other services including medical and nursing care, medications and equipment, hospice aides, as well as emotional, spiritual and bereavement support for the entire family.
Who Should Volunteer?
Anyone 18 years and older who is willing to volunteer their time to support the various activities of the hospice organization. Those who have had a personal experience with Hospice are encouraged to join the Hospice team. Volunteers play a vital role in the work of Hospice. It will allow you to share your time and talents in a very meaningful way.
What Would I Do?
Volunteers help patients, families, and staff in a variety of ways: they visit with patients, listen to their stories, read to them, play games with them, provide much needed caregiver relief, assist with special events and generally "be present" when needed.
Where Would I Go?
Patients reside in their homes and at a skilled nursing facility here in Alexander County. Special events are also held throughout the year.
How Much Time Would I Give?
We ask that volunteers be willing to give a few hours per month. Specific hours are scheduled with the Volunteer Coordinator and are arranged on an individual basis. We request that volunteers make a minimum six-month commitment to the program. Many volunteers say that you get back more than you could ever give.
How Do I Get Involved?
You will need to complete a 12 hour comprehensive training course before being assigned to a volunteer position. You will learn about the hospice philosophy, caring for the terminally ill, grief & loss education, health & safety precautions, volunteer guidelines, and more!
For more information or to find out about the next volunteer training, contact Hospice of Alexander’s Volunteer Coordinator, Tina Mitchell, at 828-632-5026 or check us out on Facebook!
