Summary:
Pre-ESL: 1:1 or 1:2 tutoring for students who do not know the English alphabet. This level focuses on the beginning stages of teaching someone to read and write with the goal of having the student eventually integrate into a larger ELL class.
ESL: Tutors will work 1:1 or 1:2 with students at varying levels of English proficiency. Training and some lesson plans will be provided.

Estimated Time Commitment: Pre-ELL and ELL tutors will commit to volunteering for at least two hours once a week for a period of six months.
Daytime: M/W/F 9am-2pm
Evening: M/W 4-8pm

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and some college
  • Must be patient, compassionate, flexible and have a positive attitude
  • Beginner level of Spanish speaking is preferred, but not required for Pre-ELL tutoring;

Role Responsibilities:

  • Tutor one on one or on occasion 2-3 students
  • Be reliable and inform Program Staff ahead of any absences
  • Motivate students with positive reinforcement, patience, and enthusiasm
  • Refer to training materials to hone skills and find information
  • Ask questions whenever they arise; ELL program staff members are available to assist you
