ORGANIZATION: Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

The Virginia Aquarium is looking for volunteers skilled in finish carpentry to assist with special construction projects. Under the direction of designated supervisor, volunteers will fabricate and prepare for finish various fixtures, wood, composite and plastic structures for installation.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Cutting, shaping and assembling wood, composite and/or plastic sections using shop tools and equipment such as planers, jointers, shapers, routers, sanders and various power saws.
  • Assembling prepared components for various structures. This includes cabinets, exhibit casework, bookcases, picture frames and doors.
  • Preparing structures for finish applications by planing, shaping and sanding using hand and power tools.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, sketches and shop drawings for milling and fabrication.
  • Preparing materials estimates as directed by supervisor.
  • Determining type and dimensions of wood stock to be used.
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment and work area.
  • Performing work of carpenter or acting as Lead Carpenter in absence of Lead Carpenter or Supervisor is possible.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

Description

The Aquarium showcases Virginia’s diverse and unique marine environment. The 89 acre campus includes: two exhibit buildings; a one-third-mile long nature trail; Virginia native gardens; an aviary with over 30 species; 3D theater; gallons of aquariums; 360 interactive exhibits; live animal habitats and two touch pools. The animal collection of approximately 12,000 represents over 700 species. Seasonal boat trips, as well as premium behind the scene exhibits add a deeper dimension to guest visits.

In recent years, the Aquarium's research and conservation efforts have grown. The Virginia Aquarium was the first certified Green Attraction in the Commonwealth. It has also taken the lead by hosting e-cycling events and developing a Sensible Seafood program. The organization is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA).
