Volunteer purpose
Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest resettles refugees fleeing persecution in their home country. When they arrive in the United States, case managers, employment specialists, and volunteers work together to support refugees in becoming self-sufficient. This volunteer will guide refugees through the process of creating a resume, completing job applications, and mock interviews to have success in their search for employment.
Duties and responsibilitiesThe volunteer in this position will come to the Refugee & Immigration Services office once per week to participate in the open office hours for refugees seeking employment. The volunteer will be responsible for assisting refugees in creating a resume, seeking and applying for jobs, and practicing interview techniques. This will expedite the process of seeking employment and lead refugees to gaining economic independence and security as soon as possible after arrival.
QualificationsThis volunteer should have basic computer skills and a willingness to teach and guide others. Speaking a client language (Arabic, Swahili, Spanish, Kinyarwanda, etc.) is beneficial, but not required. No certifications required, but willingness to learn new skills and problem solve is a must. The volunteer should have experience creating resumes and completing job applications.
Working conditionsVolunteer will be working in the common area at the Refugee & Immigration Services office. Volunteer will be expected to use a computer and help others learn how to use computers to complete employment seeking tasks.
ScheduleThe open hours for employment are Wednesdays from 10am-2pm. Volunteer is expected to work at least a two hour shift (10am-12pm or 12pm-2pm). Volunteer should commit to volunteering for at least 3 months.
Clearances RequiredAdvanced Background Check ($17) or Fingerprint Clearance Card ($65) and Central Registry required. Volunteer will attend an orientation and receive specific training as needed.
