Are you interested in working with students from San Francisco public schools during the afternoon?
hoping to work closely with San Francisco public school students in the afternoons? 826 Valencia's After School Tutoring could be the perfect fit for you!

826 Valencia provides free writing, tutoring, and publishing programs to thousands of students from under-resourced communities in San Francisco each year-and we need you to help make the magic happen. While students are distanced-learning and sheltered- in-place, we have pivoted all of our programs online to deliver our unique model of writing support and individualized tutoring remotely.

We need volunteers to make this possible! You don’t have to be an expert writer or editor, but you do have to have some reliable free time in your schedule to tutor remotely, a deep commitment to the students we serve, and a willingness to learn alongside each other and our students. The majority of our students are youth of color, and we are especially seeking volunteers committed to anti-racist work and/or who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color. We depend upon our energetic, caring tutors to ensure that we have individualized interactions with every student. Plus, it's a blast!

As a volunteer tutor, you will provide guidance to 1-2 students with their homework assignments and creative writing prompts. This is a huge opportunity to build strong, lasting relationships with students and help them be more successful with their school work. Please note: All of our programs will be online over Zoom at least through Fall Semester, as our spaces remain closed due to COVID-19 precautions.

You will have the opportunity to work with the same students week after week! These students come to 826 for help with their reading and homework, including social studies, writing assignments, spelling exercises, math, science, and general reading - so you may have the chance to exercise skills other than writing. *We currently have a high need for volunteers who are bilingual in Spanish, with weekday afternoon availability.*

Requirements for working with youth:

  • Available between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Willing to submit to a LiveScan background check

  • Able to attend one of our new volunteer orientations
  • Excited about supporting the development of young learners!

Mission Statement

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Description

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay -and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. All of our programs are offered free of charge to make them accessible to the students who would not otherwise be able to access our support.

Our goals are:

1) Transform students’ relationships to writing, building their confidence and pride.

2) Provide individualized attention and support, so students can make great leaps in learning.
3) Partner with under-resourced schools and communities, providing our free services to those who would not otherwise have access.

4) Cultivate wonder, inspiring imagination and creativity in all of our spaces and programs.
