Mission Statement

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Description

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay -and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. All of our programs are offered free of charge to make them accessible to the students who would not otherwise be able to access our support.

Our goals are:

1) Transform students’ relationships to writing, building their confidence and pride.

2) Provide individualized attention and support, so students can make great leaps in learning.
3) Partner with under-resourced schools and communities, providing our free services to those who would not otherwise have access.

4) Cultivate wonder, inspiring imagination and creativity in all of our spaces and programs.

Volunteering with 826 Valencia is truly a delightful experience. The work is meaningful, fun and challenging - the perfect volunteer opportunity! Plus, they offer volunteers so many different ways to get involved that there's really an opportunity for everyone. I currently volunteer once a week with the Buena Vista Horace Mann afterschool program and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to build relationships with students as you help them with various writing projects. Staff members are always welcoming and encouraging, and the students are wonderful to work with! If you're looking for a way to get involved in the community, I'd highly recommend checking out 826 Valencia!

I started as an intern at 826 Valencia in 2010 and have been volunteering there regularly ever since. I can't stay away! It's a fantastic organization with a really wonderful community of volunteers and supporters. And the kids are so fun! There's always something interesting and creative going on, and you'll find LOTS of different ways to get involved.

I started with 826 Valencia as an intern in September of 2013 and completely fell in love with the organization. The volunteer opportunities are FUN and the students walk away with the biggest smile on their face every time. The staff is very helpful and willing to work with volunteers and their schedules. With so many things going on, it won't be hard to find something to get involved in. And, it also doesn't hurt that they have an awesome Pirate Supply Store on site, complete with a fish theater and all.
