Food Tech For The Future: Growing Digital Farmers - Project Coordinator
Project Overview
- The purpose of this project is to bring food computer and digital farming education to local high schools to inspire curiosity and promote food tech innovation.
- A food computer is a digitized greenhouse run by a Raspberry Pi and connected to a sensor system allowing students to experiment with growing food and learning how changes in environmental conditions can affect phenotypic expression of plants.
- Arizona Sustainability Alliance is currently working with 5 schools across the valley (grades 6-12) to build, operate, and research with food computers.
Role Purpose
- To oversee the Food Tech program
- Learn how to use food computers and food computer technology
- Share that knowledge with and educate students
- An ideal candidate will be available during normal school operating hours to work with teachers in coordinating and leading educational sessions with students.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with teachers and students to build and operate food computers
- Connect with local schools to help expand the program
- Communicate with school staff, students and project volunteers to coordinate project
- Travel to schools on a regular basis to help with computer builds, maintenance, harvesting, technical issues, etc.
- Collaborate with teachers and students to assist in project maintenance
- Take pictures and record progress of plant growth and farm operations
- Be consistently available and responsive to the AZSA team and Program Manager
- Report all progress and information back to AZSA Program Manager
Ideal Skill Set
- Raspberry Pi/Python experience
- Interest in teaching and sharing knowledge
- Availability to visit schools during regular school hours
- Passionate about creating positive change in our local food system
Time commitment:
- Approximately 5-10 Hours Per Week
- Availability during normal school operating hours
