STAIR-Annapolis, Start The Adventure In Reading, is a twice-weekly, AFTER SCHOOL literacy tutoring program for Anne Arundel County Public School second grade students reading below grade level. Tutors work one-on-one with a student for an hour-long session, and we offer our volunteers the flexibility to choose their level of commitment: one day per week, two days per week, or as a substitute on an as-needed basis. Stair begins in October and finishes in mid-May. We are currently training for substitutes and January 10-May 18 tutors. Lothian site meets on Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:45. The next training date is scheduled for January 5th from 1:30-2:30, at the Michael Busch Library on West Street.

For more information on how to become a STAIR tutor, contact volunteer_coordinator@stairannapolis.org, or visit our website at https://stairannapolis.org/volunteer/application/

Mission Statement

STAIR's mission is to increase the reading level of 2nd graders, to improve students' self-esteem and self-confidence, and to provide a caring environment where reading is FUN!

STAIR-Annapolis was founded in 2006 and now includes 12 sites throughout the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, serving more than 100 Anne Arundel County Public Schools second graders. Our program provides twice-weekly literacy tutoring after school for the entire academic year for students reading below grade level, using a dedicated team of volunteer tutors and an educator-approved curriculum. Training is provided and no prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary. On average, STAIR students improve 4.3 reading levels over the course of the year!
