Start The Adventure In Reading (STAIR-Annapolis) is a twice-weekly, after school literacy tutoring program for Anne Arundel County Public Schools second graders currently reading below grade level. This is currently a virtual opportunity, however it is our plan to resume in-person tutoring, so we are only accepting local volunteers. Tutors work one-on-one with a student for an hour-long session, and we offer our volunteers the flexibility to choose their level of commitment: one day per week, two days per week, or as a substitute on an as-needed basis. We have 12 sites conveniently located at elementary schools and community centers across Annapolis and throughout Anne Arundel County, and have more than 100 children enrolled in our program. With the recent announcement by Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) of total virtual learning through the first semester, STAIR is excited to share our programming plans for the 2020-2021 school year. The protection of our volunteers, students, and organization is our top priority, and STAIR is prepared to pivot responsibly with an impactful "Plan B" until we can safely resume one-on-one, in-person tutoring. For 2020-2021 STAIR-Annapolis is pleased to announce STAIR At Home! Our modified reading program model is made up of three parts: INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT, BUILDING HOME LIBRARIES, and FAMILY ENGAGEMENT. This parallels our in-person program, while responding to the immediate health and safety needs in our communities. STAIR's mission is to increase the reading level of 2nd graders, to improve students' self-esteem and self-confidence, and to provide a caring environment where reading is FUN!
STAIR-Annapolis was founded in 2006 and now includes 12 sites throughout the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, serving more than 100 Anne Arundel County Public Schools second graders. Our program provides twice-weekly literacy tutoring after school for the entire academic year for students reading below grade level, using a dedicated team of volunteer tutors and an educator-approved curriculum. Training is provided and no prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary. On average, STAIR students improve 4.3 reading levels over the course of the year!
