We need EXPERIENCED, SAFETY-CONSCIOUS, RESPONSIBLE, OUTDOORSY and HANDY types to help us keep our trails in order!
Know how to use any of these?
- hand saw
- loppers
- chainsaw
- spray paint
- riding mower
- tractor
Gleason Meadows/Frenchman's Bluff (the trails that depart from the nature center) has about 9 miles of trails; Personius Woods (the dog-friendly trails about five minutes away on West Hill Road) has less than 5k. Both properties need trails and fields mowed, fallen logs removed, tree markers replaced, and bridges repaired.
This kind of volunteering CAN be done when the nature center is closed (so early morning, later afternoon/early evening, and weekends are all okay) but will require clear communication with the staff and facilities committee about when/where/how to accomplish tasks that require Tanglewood tools.
We have also had a rough year with the HEATING, PLUMBING, and ELECTRICAL systems in our nature center so if you're the kind of person who can make educated guesses about what the heck is happening with a water bladder or why, for some reason, heat can be produced but not actually distributed through our ductwork successfully... we have fun projects like that and we would absolutely love to have some trusted advice from volunteers who understand these systems!

Description
The mission of Tanglewood Nature Center is to lead and support education and preservation efforts in our region to achieve a heightened awareness, understanding, enjoyment, and caring for our natural environment.
We strive to fulfill our mission every day by: maintaining over ten miles of trails, offering educational programming for children and adults, providing homes in our exhibits for more than 40 native and exotic animals, and welcoming over 35,000 visitors a year.
Our hours are Tuesday through Friday (9am-4pm) and Saturday (10am-4pm). Most volunteering will need to be done during our regular hours.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS LIKE?
After you decide one of our projects sounds like a good fit for you, please fill out one of our volunteer applications - either on our website or pick up a paper copy at the office. Once that is received, we do a basic Sex Offender Registry check on all prospective volunteers, which can take several business days. Generally, within a week of getting the SOR cleared, the volunteer coordinator will email you to schedule a brief orientation/meeting with the volunteer coordinator to get you set up with your volunteer projects. After that, everything's easy!
