Volunteers Needed at the Cabarrus County Detention Center (Jail)

ORGANIZATION: Cabarrus County Public Library (Literacy Services)

Cabarrus County Public Library's Literacy Services department partners with the Cabarrus County Detention Center to provide Reading Groups for inmates, as well as an Inmate Library.

We are looking for volunteers the following:

Reading Groups - no more than 12 inmates per class

  • Female volunteers to lead reading groups when volunteers are out sick, on vacation, etc. (female classes only). Must be available Mondays from 6:30-8:00pm, Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30am, or Thursdays from 10:00-11:00am.
  • Male volunteers to lead reading groups when volunteers are out sick, on vacation, etc. (male classes only). Must be available Mondays from 9:30-11:00am, Tuesdays from 1:30-3:00pm or 6:30-7:30pm, Wednesdays from 2:00-3:30pm, or Thursdays from 1:30-3:00pm.
Inmate Library
  • 1-2 volunteers to assist with maintenance of the library, including dropping off book donations and shelving. Must be available on a week day of your choice between 8:00-5:00pm.
  • 1-2 volunteers to assist with rotating library books on various floors of the jail. Must be available every other Wednesday morning or early afternoon.
*Literacy Services orientation AND orientation at the Cabarrus County Detention Center are required to volunteer.*

CCPL's literacy program offers the following services to adults in Cabarrus County:

1. Reading and writing assistance to English speakers

2. Teaching English to non-native English speakers

3. U.S. Citizenship interview and exam preparation

4. Reading groups for inmates at the Cabarrus County Detention Center

(We also built and maintain an inmate library within the Detention Center, staffed by Literacy Services volunteers.)
