Be a Volunteer!

Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group along with the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art holds this annual event, where families are invited to honor ancestors and celebrate the cycle of life and death.

We are well underway in the planning of Dia de Muertos Parade & Festival 2018. This community-wide event will take place in the Memphis Brooks Museum on October 27, 2018.

Please check your calendar now to see if you have the time to help us make this event a reality!

Without the help of volunteers, this event could not happen.

We need volunteers to help with many activities:

  • Building and creating the community altar at the Brooks Museum
  • Set up (Car Sign Installer)
  • Volunteers Check-in Assistant
  • Parade Check-in Assistant
  • Parade Monitor
  • Street Crew

As you can see, there is a lot to do, and we need more help than ever before as the celebration has grown so much and so quickly!

Any help is welcome!

About us: Cazateatro is the first and only bilingual theater group in Tennessee. Our company started in 2010 when we decided to share our Latin and Hispanic culture with other Memphis communities, all while serving as a bridge between cultures.

Event: Dia de los Muertos Parade & Festival 2018

Event Description: Latin Celebration of Life & Death. In Mexico, this is traditionally a celebration where people gather and parade around the city. Cazateatro would like to introduce that part of the Mexican culture in Midtown Memphis through the Life & Death parade. We want the community in the mid-South to learn more about this celebration and be part of it. Teaching them about where the celebration is coming from, why is so important for the Mexican people and particular why is important to keep the traditions for new generations. Cazateatro wants this Parade to be a method of creating a bridge of union with the community. The objective is that participants and the community, in general, will learn a little more about the tradition of the day of the dead. That is why it is open to the whole community to participate.

Requirements: Volunteers will have a short training/orientation before the event. This is why we ask that volunteers plan to arrive between 8:30 am, so we can get them set up and ready to go.

11:00 a.m. - Parade leaves Overton Square
11:45 a.m - Parade arrives at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art
12:00 p.m. - Community celebration begins at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

Benefits: Community Service Hours. Free Parade T-Shirt, Snacks. Face painting! Enjoying a beautiful community event while being part of the Día de los Muertos tradition!

Description

The origin of the name 'Cazateatro’

In August of 2006, GioLópez gathered a group of people interested in learning and doing theater, which she called Cazateatro Independent Theatre. The word 'Cazateatro’ came about as a complex play on words. First, finding people interested in doing theater was a real hunt (caza, in Spanish). Also, the group gathered and rehearsed in public parks because they didn’t have a place they could call home (casa). The participants wound up opening up their homes in order to give Cazateatro its home. This anecdote of the group’s beginnings shows how the words casa and caza came to merge, giving rise to the name 'Cazateatro’.
