Teen Literacy Program Internship

Words Alive is a non-profit organization that inspires a commitment to reading and develops shared reading experiences for children, youth and adults. Unlike other literacy organizations that focus on teaching individuals how to read, Words Alive seeks to imbue program participants with a lifelong love of reading and learning. We accomplish this by creating and supporting:

  • Targeted programs for underserved communities;
  • Community learning forums;
  • Community-wide reading projects;
  • Model reading programs; and
  • Networks for communicating about reading.

Words Alive seeks interns on an ongoing basis (spring and fall semesters) who seek to acquire valuable, real-world experience. Interns also acquire a deep understanding of the nonprofit sector and the inner workings of a successful literacy organization. We offer a fun and fast-paced office environment. We welcome innovative thinkers who can come up with new ways to do what we do better. A strong sense of urgency, attention to detail, and a willingness to grow and learn are a must.

Basic Assignment: Under the supervision of the volunteer manager and program manager, the Words Alive intern will perform the following functions:

Major Functions:

  • The Teen Literacy Program Intern would be a crucial part of the Teen Services Program Management Team. The primary project would be to develop resources for the Adolescent Book Group program, including but not limited to: reviewing contemporary novels for potential program use, writing and/or editing curriculum guides for literary analysis of middle-to-high school-level novels and creating how-to videos for sample activities, cooperative learning strategies, and facilitation techniques. The secondary project would be assisting the Words Alive Westreich Scholarship program, by processing scholar files during peak times.

  • The Teen Literacy Program Intern would be an additional teammate focused on the growth of the Adolescent Book Group program. Development of resources is a key component of packaging the program as we move toward expanding program delivery to new partners and marketing curriculum resources for sale.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

Required skills:

  • Second semester junior or senior college status with emphasis on education.
  • Solid computer skills with proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Editing and formatting skill sets.
  • Strong sense of urgency, flexible, organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task.
  • Professional demeanor and excellent phone skills with the ability to communicate clearly, effectively and respectfully with co-workers, board members, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Internship may require occasional lifting of program supplies.

Intern Need: 10-15 hours per week to start immediately.
