Pacific Pocket Mouse

The San Diego Zoo Global Institute for Conservation Research's Pacific Pocket Mouse conservation efforts need some support from local volunteer near the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park where we are supporting a population of PPM.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Putting lettuce and seeds in the supplemental feeding stations once a week at the PPM reintroduction sites.

IMPACT ON CONSERVATION and SDZG: The volunteer position will benefit SDZG's conservation efforts by increasing awareness of the plight of the Pacific pocket mouse, and playing a role in leading the fight against extinction.

INITIAL TRAINING: 2-3 shifts with staff member at the Laguna Beach Wilderness Park site.

TIME COMMITMENT: 3 to 4 hours once per month. Start of shift around 3pm during the winter and around 6pm during the summer.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • In fair shape
  • Ability to hike for 30 to 45 minutes into the park and another 30 to 45 minutes out of the park
  • Ability to kneel and stand/bend over multiple times
  • Constantly moving for 1-1.5 hours during the feedings

CHARACTERISTICS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Have a positive attitude
  • Strictly adhere to our San Diego Zoo Global policies & procedures as well as follows Orange County Park rules
  • Strong interest in conservation & field work experience
  • Able to complete duties independently and very responsible
  • Detail oriented & ability to multi-task

If confirmed as a volunteer, applicant must be able to attend a San Diego Zoo Global orientation and complete field safety training.
