We are looking for anyone talented in any sort of creative activity (art, calligraphy, creative writing or poetry, origami, knitting, magic tricks, acting, improv, tarot card reading.... you name it!) who is able to donate an hour of your time to teach an informal class on your skill! We are a nonprofit that provides support groups to teens and adults with body image issues and eating disorders. The creative arts volunteer portion of our groups helps our clients develop new coping skills and find out their interests and talents.

Since Covid we have had to move our support groups online, but if your activity is compatible with online learning we would love to be able to work with you! Not looking for professional instructors necessarily! Just someone knowledgeable, fun, and energetic!

Groups run in the evenings during weekdays (anywhere from 5pm-7:30) and we usually have volunteers come online for anywhere from 30-45min of that time.

Mission Statement

Gemmed is a therapeutic empowerment course for teens and young adults with eating disorders, low self-esteem, and body image struggles. Each class consists of a creative arts activity, a family-style meal, and group therapy. As a supplemental form of support for individual therapy and/or a step down resource for those recently discharged from an inpatient facility, our goal is to reintroduce healthy eating patterns and socialization to our clients while developing their coping skills that focus on the whole person.

Description

Gemmed is a new nonprofit in Los Angeles with classes opening in the fall, mainly during afternoon and evening hours. We are looking for volunteers for our creative activity portion of our classes, which consists of an hour of volunteer time with a flexible schedule. We are looking for volunteers that specialize in: art, painting, dance, yoga, crafts, writing, comedy, acting, etc., who are looking to make a difference in the lives of teens and young adults with eating disorders and low self-esteem.
