Seeds of Hope provides a safe, supportive environment to the poorest children in Huaraz, Peru, while encouraging them to stay in the education system and improve their future life prospects.

A day in the life of a volunteer:

9:00am - Arrive at the school, greet the students and help them settle into their classrooms. Assist the children with their homework, or assign additional practice for the children who don’t have homework. Most of our students struggle with Mathematics and Literacy, so much of our help is targeted towards these areas.

11:00am - The children have free time, "recreo", where they typically engage international volunteers in epic tournaments of Jenga, Twister, or play outside.

11:30am - Children wash their hands and volunteers serve a protein-rich breakfast to all students. Following the meal, the children brush their teeth.

12:00pm - The morning session ends. Now volunteers have free time to eat lunch, explore Huaráz, practice Spanish and prepare activities for the afternoon session. Some volunteers prefer to go to the gym, while others elect to take an afternoon nap.

3:00pm - The afternoon session begins, following the same format as the morning. In the mornings, the older children arrive; in the afternoons, the younger children participate in the session.

5:00pm - Period of recreo for the younger students.

5:30pm - Children wash their hands and volunteers serve a warm, protein-rich meal to the students. After eating, the children brush their teeth.

6:00pm - The afternoon session ends, and volunteers clear up.

Seeds of Hope also provides evening English classes to local adults in the community which volunteers are encouraged to teach/ support.

Mission Statement

Seeds of Hope's mission is to support children living in extreme poverty in Huaráz, Perú by providing vocational training for those without economic means, thus enabling them to break the cycle of poverty. We provide a supportive environment in which the children obtain help and encouragement with their homework. They are also given emotional support from our volunteers, taught the importance of personal hygiene, and provided with a nutritious meal at the end of each session. Seeds provides the students with school uniforms, study materials, and school matriculation fees and/or medical assistance as the need arises. In addition, Seeds supports students with their further education once they graduate from high school and a number of these ex students now make up our team of Peruvian Tutors.

Description

Our program runs from our own small school in the center of Huaráz and provides a safe space for the children to do their homework and additional practice, with the help of our qualified teachers, plus local and international volunteers.

At Seeds of Hope, volunteers make up the majority of our workforce and are very important to the functioning of the organization. We always need volunteers to help at Seeds and welcome anyone who displays a positive outlook and enthusiasm.
