Seeds of Hope's mission is to support children living in extreme poverty in Huaráz, Perú, and to provide vocational training for those without economic means, thus enabling them to break the cycle of poverty. We provide a supportive environment in which the children obtain help and encouragement with their homework. They are also given emotional support from our volunteers, taught the importance of personal hygiene, and provided with a nutritious meal at the end of each session. Seeds provides the students with school uniforms, study materials, and school matriculation fees and/or medical assistance as the need arises. In addition, Seeds supports students with their further education once they graduate from high school and a number of these ex students now make up our team of Peruvian Tutors.
Our program runs from our own small school in the center of Huaráz and provides a safe space for the children to do their homework and additional practice, with the help of our qualified teachers, plus local and international volunteers.
At Seeds of Hope, volunteers make up the majority of our workforce and are very important to the functioning of the organization. We always need volunteers to help at Seeds and welcome anyone who displays a positive outlook and enthusiasm. Volunteers engage in many meaningful activities and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion or age.
There are many opportunities to partner with us, whether it is working directly with the children as a school tutor or through working with us on projects such as: - Environmental education and Sustainability: e.g. recycling and gardening projects; - Building construction and maintenance; - Media and Communication: e.g. video and photography projects; - Performing and Visual Arts workshops: e.g. puppet show and mural projects; - English classes; - Literacy and Numeracy: e.g. developing literacy learning resources and mental maths competitions; - Health and Wellbeing: e.g. health education, sports and games to encourage physical fitness; - Fundraising: e.g. fundraising events and merchandise; - Social work: e.g. programs to raise self-esteem and prevent teenage pregnancy.
