Summary: The following volunteer positions are dedicated to this non-profit’s mission of creating opportunities for immigrants and other community members in the Puget Sound region through comprehensive services focused on self-sufficiency, inclusion and advocacy.

Read2Me Tutor Read2Me tutors are matched with one struggling Kindergarten-3 rd grade reader to help him or her gain confidence and ability so that she or he is better able to read at grade level by the end of 3 rd grade.

Training: Volunteer Orientation - Read2Me Tutor Training - Quarterly District Tutor Training

Commitment: 1-2 days/week * 45 minutes/week * October through May

Duties: Tutor one student reading for 45 minutes once a week * Help the students understand basic reading skills such as letter and sound recognition * Support the reading techniques children learn in the classroom * Complete and maintain weekly tracking sheet * Commit to a scheduled tutoring session and arrive on time

Qualifications: Patience and flexibility in working with children from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds-Ability to follow through with volunteer commitments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and written) in English, to follow procedures and to work in a teaching environment.

Hours Available for Read2Me Tutor: 45 minute periods - Monday-Friday 8am-3pm at four locations in zip codes 98404, 98405, and 98409

EMPLOYMENT CLASS ASSISTANTThis volunteer position serves with the Employment Services staff to assists community members with gaining recent work experience through classroom workshops that prepare clients for internships or finding sustainable employment.

Training: * Volunteer Orientation * 1:1 training with Workshop Instructor * Working with Adult Learners (optional)

Commitment: * 3 hours/week * 2 quarters (6 months)

Duties: * Help students in computer lab with job readiness skills, resume building, job searching * Record and report hours spent in classroom monthly * Meet with Workshop Instructor as needed to discuss/assess client progress. * Assist with workshop activities

Qualifications: * Genuine interest in and respect for people with diverse cultural and backgrounds

  • Willingness to learn new skills and contribute ideas and energy to the classroom * Outgoing personality, enjoys conversation * Patience and sensitivity to the needs of adult students

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (ELA) Classroom Assistant This volunteer positions works alongside the classroom instructor with adult limited English speakers in a fun classroom setting, substantially contributing to students’ development in a personal, meaningful way.

Training: * Volunteer Orientation * 1:1 training with Classroom Instructor * Working with Adult Learners (optional)

Commitment: * 2-4 days/week * 4 hours/week * 2 quarters (6 months)

Duties: * Assist the instructor with classroom duties * Work with small groups as directed by the instructor * Record and report hours spent with students each month * Meet with the instructor to discuss and evaluate the day’s activities

Qualifications: * Genuine interest in and respect for people with diverse cultural backgrounds

  • Willingness to learn new skills and contribute ideas and energy to the classroom * Outgoing personality, enjoys conversation * Patience and sensitivity to the needs of adult students

Benefits: * Provide direct help to volunteers who are helping the undereducated learn basic skills

Hours Available: 2-3 hour blocks, Monday-Thursday 9am-8pm

BASIC EDUCATION FOR ADULTS CLASSROOM ASSISTANT (math - basic algebra) This position works alongside the classroom instructor with adult learners that are preparing to take the GED and substantially contributing to students’ development in a personal, meaningful way.

Training: * Volunteer Orientation * 1:1 training with Classroom Instructor * Working with Adult Learners (optional)

Commitment: * 2-4 days/week * 4 hours/week * 2 quarters (6 months)

Duties: * Assist the instructor with classroom duties * Work with small groups as directed by the instructor * Record and report hours spent with students each month * Meet with the instructor to discuss and evaluate the day’s activities

IMMIGRATION INTERN FOR IMMIGRATION SERVICESThe Immigration Intern would be assisting the Immigration Services staff with general support to the Immigration Project.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Organize, update, and maintain client files with mandated information
  • Assist in scheduling, preparing materials and conducting new participant intakes and orientations
  • Provide program information and requirements to new participants
  • Provide support to other staff as needed; contribute to the team effort
  • Assist with planning and carrying out program activities such intake and eligibility screenings
  • Shadow case manager and learn different immigration processes
  • Attend cultural fairs and pass out flyers
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent organizational and computer skills * Demonstrated ability to work independently under tight deadlines * Ability to work as a team member * Ability to work with persons of various ethnicities and cultures *Bilingual in Spanish highly desired

Experience: 1 year office experience preferred *1 year working in a client intensive environment preferred
